Javelin Nationals - Race 1 (1st February 2000) 12.40 Start

Race started in 25 knots, gusting 35 knots, course Triangle, WL x 2.

Alex Hinton (Desperado) retired before the start after concerns of
damaging his borrowed boat. Alex's previous crew, Graham Roberts from
Ohope, had surgery on his foot the previous night after damaging it in
the final race in the Sanders Cup.

Ten boats started the race, Alex Vallings/Hamish Hey (Freckle Deckle)
and Peter Precey/Stu McLachlan (www.javelins.org) returned to the start
after confusion with an individual recall signal after the start. Bob
Vernon/Brad Webb (Blunderbus) were late for the start after returning to
fixing a broken batten.

David Lee/John Wilson (Breakaway) retired after the start after twisting
his ankle, and taking a hit to the head.

Rob Fordyce/Grant Macduff (Night Nurse) lead to the top mark, closely
followed by Freckle Deckle. Night Nurse capsized during the kite hoist
with the lead taken by Freckle Deckle. David and Wayne Brown (Zenith)
were third to the top mark. Peter Holt/Steve Holt (Psycho) were trying
to decide whether it would be better to stay back and troll for fish or
sail with the rest of the fleet.

Freckle Deckle capsized at the bottom mark gybing. Night Nurse regained
the lead, and held it until 400m from the finish when they started a
maneuver which resulted in the "Flying macduff" shearing off the
mast-ram, jib clew, gennaker and holing the boat. Freckle Deckle
finished first, www.javelins.org pipped Murray Bain/Neil Morris (Coup
d'etat) by a prod length to finish second. Blunderbus gained a credible
4th after working back through the fleet, followed by the limping Night
Nurse with the jib clew 1/2 way up the forestay.

Race Two (1st February 2000) (back to back after 1st race)

Preliminary - Breakaway now with Alex Hinton skippering was snotted by a
huge gust from above on the way to the start resulting in the mast
breaking between the gooseneck and sidestays.

Race started in 15 knots gusting 30 knots, course Triangle, WL x 2.

Blunderbus lead from the start with Freckle Deckle in second, and Night
Nurse in third. Psycho held fourth followed by the Otago fleet Coup

Blunderbus on the last windward leg and took their second win of the
regatta followed by Blunderbus and NightNurse. The Otago fleet came in
fourth and fifth followed by www.javelins.org followed very closely by
the Holt brothers in Psycho. Psycho having lost fourth place after
swimming when their kite sheet got stuck on the end of the boom during a
gybe.

Race Three (1st February 2000) (back to back after 2nd race)

Race started in 20 gusting 30 knots, course WL x 3.

Freckle Deckle lead to the top mark, followed by Blunderbus and Night
Nurse, with Blunderbus capsizing during the hoist. Coup d'etat and
www.javelins.org followed in fourth and fifth. There was a big gap back
to a second fleet led by Psycho after a wind change split the fleet.

Psycho had a problem at the bottom mark, confusion caused by the change
from Port to Starboard course resulted in them having to re-round, but
they held their position against Zenith. Psycho was later overtaken by
Zenith after a capsize on the next downwind leg.

Freckle Deckle won, followed by Night Nurse and www.javelins.org.
