Results Black Heart Kingham Trophy

The Kingham Trophy Invitation Race for the Sanders Memorial Cup was held today. The Kingham Trophy is awarded to the winner of this single race which preceeds the Javelin Class National Championships.

Sailed in a South Westerly breeze of 12-18 knots over a 9.5 nautical mile course. The racing was close with the North Harbour crew of Rob Fordyce and Craig Gilberd sailing "Bungholio" leading to the top mark, closly followed by the Auckland crew of Alex Vallings and Hamish Hey in "Freckle Deckle". On a fast 1 mile reach to the next mark Vallings/Hey soaked a little deeper and had an inside advantage at the wing mark with Fordyce/Gilberd a few boat lengths back. The winners of the previous 3 days Sanders Cup competition, Nathan and BenBax "The Unknown" rounded the wing mark in 3rd place.

On the reach across to North Head Vallings/Hey extended their lead and started the next upwind leg with a 50 metre advantage. On the 1.6 mile beat against the tide to the top mark, Fordyce/Gilberd tacked on shift to lay the top mark, with Vallings and Hey sailing on a slightly lower course to the mark. By the top mark the boats were within 2 boat lengths again, and rounded the mark on a a big 1.6 mile downwind drag race.

Fordyce/Gilberd gybed early to gain advantage from the outgoing tide, with Vallings/Hey speeding down the Okahu Bay wave wall in the flatter water. Around North Head the boats converged on opposite gybes at about 18 knots boat speed, Fordyce/Gilberd on Port gybed onto starboard on the top of Vallings and Hey taking their wind and giving them the inside advantage going into the bottom mark. Fordyce and Gilberd dropped the gennaker early, while Vallings and Hey did a late drop and sailed a wider course around the mark to gain the lead again.

By the top mark, Vallings/Hey had extended to a 50 metre lead, and gybed around the top mark on a fast reach to the finish line. Unfortunately, their plans came unstuck when they rounded the wing mark and headed out for another lap of the course. Not beleiving their luck, Fordyce/Gilberd sailed the correct course and reached through the finish line to win the Kingham Trophy, followed in second place by the Bax's.
