Kingham Trophy, Friday, 9 April 2004
The race started in a shifty 12
knot breeze, with a single lap and then a long beat back to the yacht
club. Fifteen boats lined up on the start line, with two boats out with
broken masts, from earlier racing. The fleet was quite close
approaching the 1st mark, with the wind shifts helping the
boats to swap places. The downwind leg also allowed for a few more
passing opportunities. This set the stage for the long fight into the
yacht, with plenty of shifts especially as we got closer to land.
The
boats had to put their thinking caps on coming in, as there were a few
reefs, and other obstructions to contend with in addition to the wind
shifts and light patches. The six front runners split, making sure
there was no follow the leader, in an attempt to pull off something
special in the last stages of the race. Freckle Deckle took out the
race, with a slim 30 second margin on the next three chasing boats,
with Philpnhel, Flying Circus, and Bunghollio all within three seconds
of each other.
