Kingham Trophy (Morning) - Harbour race

Race 1 (afternoon) - Small seas starting in 5-6 knots from the west, with a
consistent left hand shift up the first beat as the boats headed towards Gisborne
township. "The Unknown" (Nathan Bax) was first round the top mark, with Freckle
Deckle (Nick Taylor) second. Half way down the run a 180 degree wind shift reversed
the course and at the bottom mark a change of course sent the fleet out towards the
sea with a 270 degree rounding of the bottom mark required. Light shitty conditions
saw a bunch make the new top mark, with Freckle Deckle leading from Bungholio (Rob
Fordyce), and www.javelins.org (Pete Precey). About 500m into this new downhill the
race was abandoned.

Race 1 Resailed (afternoon) The 0.9Nm beat mistakenly became around 2 miles after a
probable GPS mark laying error with the top mark was unable to be seen from the
bottom. The pin end bacame a bit of a mess with Bungholio catching the pin after
being shunted into it by a port tack starter. The leaders headed out to the left for
the predicted shift, with Freckle Deckles good start taking them the closest to
shore. The wind lightened from the left which allowed Bungholio to see what was
happening and tack 100m below the bunch onto the new layline as the wind shifted. The
left hand bunch sailed into the top mark slightly eased with Phlipnhel leading into
the top, followed by Freckle Deckle and then a pack of Fat Boys Swim (Brian
Hennesey), Flying Circus (David Brown) and Bungholio. At the bottom mark Phlipnhel
lead from Freckle Deckle with Flying Circus 80m back. A changed of course saw the new
top mark reset to the right. After another on the wind slog fest the positions stayed
much the same, with Phil McNeill ending up winning after the new run by 5 minutes
from Freckle Deckle. www.javelins.org and The Unknown had elected to head offshore on
the final run and ended up loosing a few places.

Wednesday 18th

Race 2 (Morning) - Rigged up in the rain, with everyone in their best foul weather
gear, the 15 minutes before the start saw some big swells, and lots of wind with
exciting hairy downwind rides. The race started with a pin end bias, Freckle Deckle
and The Unknown tried the port tack start but couldnt find a way through. Phlpnhel
lead the fleet out to the left with Fat Boys Swim following closely. At the top
Phlpnhel had a 50m lead with Bungholio, Fat Boys, the Unknown and Flying Circus
rounding together. Downwind the pack gybed half way to the lay line, with Bungholio
overtaking Fat Boys by sailing slightly lower and catching a few good swells. Freckle
Deckle had elected to gybe at the layline and picked up a good breeze to sail around
the inside bunch and move into 2nd at the bottom mark a few boat lengths ahead of
Bungholio, with the others now 50m back. The 3 leaders went out to the right, with
Bungholio out pointing and overtaking Freckle Deckle. The pack rounded later, and the
breeze shifted to the left those rounding later took a nice lift into the top mark,
with The Unknown coming in 2nd after Phlpnhel, followed by Fat Boys and Flying Circus
and then Bungholio and Freckle Deckle loosing a few places. On the run Phlpnhel held
their lead, Unknown finished 2nd, followed by Fat Boys and Bungholio. Freckle Deckle
overtook Flying Circus downhill to come in 5th.

Race 3 (Morning)- Abandoned on the 2nd run.

Race 3 Resailed (Afternoon) - Can't remember much of this one, all was becoming a bit
of a blur. Nick Taylor has just gone to the local canvas maker to get his gennaker
borrowed from the Bax's repaired and is the only one with an encyclopedic knowledge
of each wind shift and every boats position round the marks. Maybe we will get back
to this, but the results will show Frekcle Deckle winning from Bungholio and
www.javelins.org getting their first "counting" result after winning the Sanders Cup
a few days earlier.

Race 4 (Afternoon) - General Recall after Hot Gossip (Antje Schreiber) lead the fleet
over the line early, and returned to apologise to the committee boat. Bungholio lead
out of the start from the pin, with Freckle Deckle getting involved in an incident
and having a 720 after the start. Bungholio over layed the top mark on Starboard,
with Freckle Deckle tacking inside to lead by a few boat lengths at the top mark. The
race stayed much the same with Freckle Deckle holding position and leading from
Bungholio at the end of the race. Despite both boats hitting opposite downwind
laylines no significant advantage was made by either as the main advantage was
hooking a swell and hanging on in the big bear off that followed. The bow shackle for
the prod ripped off on www.javelins.org 5 boat lengths before the finish. They sailed
to shore, removed the prod and came back ready for race 5 with no prod, read below.

Race 5 (Afternoon) - This one could be called Race 4, the Sequel. It was so similar
in start and racing to race 4 that we couldn't (Bungholio) remember if we had down 1
or 6 laps. Same results in the front 4 places as before. The Unknown elected to pull
out after the first run in frustration at the 6 races and 8 hours on the water that
day.... The back of the fleet were fighting with www.javelins.org who sailed the
entire race without a gennaker and still managed to beat Wild Fire and Wet & Wild.
The Australian crew of Ease Up (Rod McGregor) were determined not to be beaten by a
prod less boat and eventually got their way after some decent scrapping with
www.javelins.org.

Race 6 (Morning) www.javelins.org lead with good upwind speed, but Freckle Deckle took the lead on the 2nd beat when www.javelins.org broke another trapeze rope and dropped the crew in the tide.  Bungholio took its first swim in a gybe in the first run, and fought back from behind to finish in 5th. Race was won by Freckle Deckle, with www.javelins.org holding on to 2nd despite no trapeze.

Race 7 (Morning) Another big race, this time www.javelins.org was leading at the top mark, and Freckle Deckle was close behind. On the first run the leaders headed out to the left of the course (away from shore). In 3rd, Bungholio noticed the wind lightening for the two leaders and gybed inshore to take a steady breeze which allowed them to soak almost all the way into the bottom mark, gaining about 400m on the front two boats to lead at the bottom mark and for the rest of the race. Freckle Deckle held on to finish 2nd.

Race 8 (Afternoon) - Held in a north westerly breeze of 20 knots gusting 30 and resonably flat water this race was one hell of a lot of fun. Pin end bias line, had the fleet moving out for a few hundred meters on starboard before heading back to the beach on port. www.javelins.org had a good lead round the top mark from The Unknown, the Freckle Deckle and Bungholio. Freckle Deckle gybed early back into the beach, while everyone else followed www.javelins.org out towards the left. Freckle Deckle took the lead on the mark, with the rest of the fleet close behind. Freckle Deckle held their lead to the top mark, and on the downwind got some air, some rudder cavitation and it was all over for a while, with some damage to the mainsail when they got it back up again.. www.javelins.org held the lead for the next two legs and finished ahead, bunholio and fat boys had a duel down the right side of the course with Bungholio crashing in the gybe, and fat boys grannying to finish 2nd. Bungholio came through in 3rd after washing its sails.

Race 9 (afternoon) - Another North Westerly, but this time trying to hold out  the sea breeze. The course was moved up to the top of the bay to try and keep in the land breeze, and eventually the land breeze won, the sea breeze buggered off and we had a good few races. This was a series deciding race, with Bungholio having to win, and Freckle Deckle place 4th or worse to keep the competition open. In the race, Bungholio and Freckle Deckle both went left with most of the fleet heading right. The top mark was close, as was the first run with the boats staying on top of each other. After rounding the bottom mark together Bungholio climbed out from above Freckle Deckle on the wind in a nice vane and opened up a good lead, bringing Fat Boys with them into 2nd. Bungholio extended her lead a bit, with Fat Boys safe in 2nd. With boats running into the finish from left and right it looked like Freckle Deckle should be safe in 3rd, and they managed to squeeze in 8 seconds ahead of 4th placed Phlipnhel to take the South Pacifics title.

Race 10 (afternoon) - With the series decided, some pre-arrangement had a number of crews deciding that a crew swap race was a good way to finish off the event. With the crews moving onto the helm, and the brains of the outfit moving to the fronts of the boats it was all on. It was also noticiable that the crews had no financial interest in the boats, as the starts were as close as ever with most crews fighting for the heavily biased boat end. Up the first beat instead of the usual 5 boats, another few boats had caught up, and there was a brilliant bunch of around 8 boats all jostling it out for the lead. Craig Gilberd skipped Bungholio lead to the top mark, followed by Ben Bax steering The Unknown, and then some good scrapping with Blunderbus, and Hot Gossip and Riders in the Storm right up there. Eventually Bungholio and The Unknown moved out to hold 1st and 2nd, with Fat Boys (Brian still in charge, Steve having failed his skippers trial before the race) in 3rd. Freckle Deckle had a few issues with a determined Reece Brailey in charge, and Nick falling off the wire, or something causing a bit of a swim on the wind. Bob Vernon skippered Blunderbus held on for their best result of 4th, and Antje Schreiber gave herself a pair of 5th's in the last two races. This race caused more off the water discussion and excitement than any other, and was probably the best race of the series. Ben Bax at prizegiving offered a trophy to make it a regular event.
