Combined 36th Australian National
Championships & South Pacific Interdominion Championship, 2006/2007
December 28th 2006 - January 5th 2007, Chelsea Yacht Club, Melbourne, Victoria. Aaron Hirst and Paul Newman sailing Warren won both the South Pacific and National titles held at Chelsea Yacht Club over the Christmas period. The regatta was sailed in predominately light 5-10knot easterly breezes, with no sign of the ‘usual’ sea breeze except during the invitation race series. Six boats from New Zealand and 9 from WA joined the Vic fleet for extremely competitive racing. Warren, who won 2 heats and were 2nd in 5, showed great speed in the light conditions, but also produced consistent results in the two heavier races of the series. After 2 drops they were left with only 1st and 2nd places which is testament to this consistency. Five points separated them from the second placed Javelin, Philpnhel sailed by Phil McNeil and Matt Smith from NZ. Philpneal revealed in the light breeze winning 3heats, but was unable to hold fleet position when the breeze built. The reigning South Pacific champion Create Havoc sailed by Nick Taylor and Reece Bailey finished 3rd, with another NZ boat Riders on the Storm sailed by Ross and Colin Shanks taking 4th. All but one of the kiwi Javelins finished in the top ten, which continues their ascendency over the Australian fleet in general. However the Australian’s and especially Chelsea YC was left smiling as Aaron and Paul claimed the title, and became the first Chelsea boat to do so in the long history of the South Pacific competition. The 36th Australian Championships were held concurrently with the South Pacs, and not surprisingly, Warren took this title also with 5 wins. Their training partners and another Chelsea Javelin Unzipped sailed by Brett Williams and Brett Taylor placed 2nd with consistent placing’s. WA Windrush sailed by Gary Kerman and Chris Woodward recovered well to win the two windy races, but like the rest of the WA fleet, struggled in the light breezes. James Thomson and Greg Parsons sailing LA Woman finished clear in 4th place. The Veterans title was won by David Jones from WA, the Junior title by Jarrod Blight from WA, and the Ladies title by Allison Kemp of Vic. The Javelin fleets in NZ and West Australia have been booming over the last few years, with active building programs. The Victorian fleet has made resurgence over the last year, with Warren’s win a great boost. Several new boats are currently being built, and with Warren being sold at the regatta, the winners will be putting a new boat onto the water. This all bodes well for the Nationals next year in Perth. For more information visit www.chelseayachtclub.com.au or www.javelins.org. Information |
